From a Small Workshop to Canada’s Leading Reel Manufacturer

The story of J. Hamelin is one of entrepreneurship, innovation, and growth. What began in 1938 as a small family workshop has grown into Canada’s leading manufacturer of high-quality wooden reels, now proudly part of the Carris Group.

1938 – Humble Beginnings

Joseph Hamelin founded the company on Main Street in Lachine, Québec, where he made keys in the front and reels in the back of his small shop.

1955 – Room to Grow

The business moved to neighboring LaSalle, setting up on a larger piece of land to support its expansion.

1983 – New Leadership

Harold Stotland joined Hamelin with an investor, ushering in a new phase of growth and modernization.

1988 – Expanding Across Ontario

Hamelin acquired Allin Cable Reels in Bowmanville, Ontario. This milestone also introduced reel return capabilities in both Québec and Ontario, laying the foundation for today’s recycling and sustainability programs.

1990 – Strengthening Operations

Hamelin acquired Huntsville Timber Products and consolidated operations into existing facilities, improving efficiency and scale.

1996 – Relocation to Boisbriand

The company moved its base of operations from LaSalle to Boisbriand, Québec, to better serve its growing customer base.

2008 – Partnership with Carris

Carris Reels acquired a 50% interest in J. Hamelin, beginning a strong collaboration that combined local expertise with global resources.

2010 – Moving to Saint-Jérôme

Hamelin relocated its operations to Saint-Jérôme, Québec, which remains its head office and main manufacturing facility today.

2013 – A 75-Year Legacy

Hamelin proudly celebrated 75 years in business, marking its enduring role in Canada’s reel industry.

2015 – Becoming Part of Carris Reels

Carris Reels acquired 100% of J. Hamelin, securing its place as the Canadian division of the Carris Group and continuing its legacy as the country’s leading wooden reel manufacturer.
